VW owner forums are terrible.
People liked my custom-made shift boot that used matching seat fabric in my GTI. So, since I had extra fabric laying around, I had the same shop make a few more.
Tried to sell them on a VW forum, priced to basically just recover my costs. Ad gets removed because I’m a vendor, somehow.
Car culture sucks. I like my car. Don’t care at all for the fellow VW owners. Have yet to find anyone who isn’t a tool, yet. I’m sure there are a few who aren’t horrid, but I haven’t enountered any.

When I owned my WRX the advice I got for NASIOC was “just never make a post or interact with people in any way and you’ll be fine”.

I’ve been scolded on the Classified forums after being a contributing member for 10 years, all because I created a listing with “OBO” and started lowering the price (basically a Dutch auction). To be fair, a lot of sites have gotten so hit by spammers over they years, they’re like Nazis about the Classified rules.
Worst I ever saw were the people on the Ford T-bird forums (modern version). A bunch of angry middle-aged men running the place like a neighborhood association.

I’m convinced one of the requirements for running a car forum is “must be an absolute control freak.”

LoL about the T-bird forums! Really. It’s funny, some of the Buick Riviera forums are like that for the older cars, but for the late model Rivieras it’s mostly younger people on the forums.

The montecarloss.com forum is the most chill car forum of all time. I am amazed at the lack of drama.

The toxic culture around forums have really kept me from trying to access that information. I know i could use it, between my asr woes on my E class and convertible fabric changes on my soft top. And heaven forbid i ever dare look at owning an FD mazda.
This fear has even kept me from getting into arcade and pinball forums to source parts for my game machines there.
I know there are plemty of honest, good folk but the stories and reputations you hear of.
Side note, what did those shifter boots look like? A friend of mine has a 20th anniversary gti and he digs on that sorta stuff.

I have a MK7, so I am not sure the fabric is the right pattern for your friend’s car.

Might be true of all forums. I’ve noticed similar behavior in various motorcycle and cycling forums as well.

Forums are pretty terrible in general, but VW/Audi/BMW forums are the worst. When I’m driving the S3, I often see a flat brim staring me down out of the window of a poorly done up GTI letting his BOV sneeze all over the place. I’m just like

the only motorcycle forum I’m on right now is hdforums.com; they’re not run with an iron fist. on the other hand, given the age and bent of the typical Harley owner, there’s a ton of “get off mah lawn! #MAGA” to offset that.

I feel like I’m one of the good ones (that judgement might vary based on where I’m being viewed from I guess...)
But speaking for me and my few enthusiast friends: We don’t hang out on forums much. We are either spending time working on or enjoying our cars, or we’re busy at jobs/family/social outings. The guys with half a million posts on the forum are often jerks because that what they spend all their free time doing.
Plus, I’m finding that the age group that the certain model tends to attract really defines the group. The Honda/Acura group that I follow on Facebook is pretty horrible. Constantly being hopeless and asking for help on very basic things like “What is this thing leaking oil?” or “Who has a car they will sell me for $1000?”. The Subaru Group is better, but it is very much a circle jerk of “Look at this cool STi I saw, YOHB?” The Mustang club was 90% old guys talking about how much they spent on their restoration and which shop did it.

I was given the same advice but that the forester.org folks are alright.

I was on DirtyImpreza for a short period of time and things were more friendly than NASIOC, I just never spent much time there due to a lack of interest in off-road stuff.

I’ve grown to really appreciate Oppo. I wish more forums would enforce the “Be excellent to each other” rule.
I really enjoy that I can ask questions or make comments and not be made a fool of. I really enjoy that I can post something and the first 5 responses are not “WHY DONT YOU USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION YOU ASS.” I really enjoy the variety of users and opinions that follow. The diversity is awesome and not commonly found in car culture.

Nah, you’re of the age to finally do stuff. Everyone who hangs out on forums all day can’t afford to do what they want to do.

when I had an SRT-4, the forums were a mixed bag. usually the worse was some bullheaded kid who asked for advice, then started asking a bunch of ways to avoid following that advice.
the worst part was their buy/sell/trade forum. They had a long-ish list of reasonable pre-requisites before you would be allowed to sell anything, but in addition to that they had a final rule where if you posted something, it had to be reviewed and approved by a moderator. and (this is the WTF part) if they didn’t approve it and let it post, they specifically said they would not tell you why even if you asked.
